South Park CG

The city of Opelousas, LA, maintains a nice camping facility in South Park. The park is located 2 miles west of I-49 on US-190, then south a few blocks to 1489 S. Market Street.

This was one of those pleasant little "finds" one stumbles across now and then. Found it from a listing in Don Wright's Free Campgrounds. We chose a site in a grassy field.

Date of visit: Mar 2007

Another view of the row of 14 sites in this area of the park. Each has W/E (30A) hookups.

If you prefer to be on pavement, there are 10 apots in a parking lot just as one enters the park. If you look closely, you can see the W/E hookups on the poles along the edge of the grass.
Down the hill in front of the row we were in were 14 more sites with hookups. These were more or less in the middle of the picnic area.
It took me awhile to notice all the sites. There was another row along the road in front of our site, which is just off to the right.
I found another 20 sites around the outfield perimeter of another ball field. A home run might be disastrous!
If you have kids with you, there's a nice playground right beside the pavement camping sites.
There is a small bathroom facility in the picnic area. Rather primitive and no showers, though. This would be handy to any of the grassy sites, but the hard pavement sites are at the other end of the park.

Notes

W/E (30A) for $10.00

Pick a site, a park security ranger will come around to collect the camping fee.
