Although we have stayed here several times over the years, we did not spend the night this year. After a visit to the nearby St Marks NWR, we stopped to take a few pictures. Shown here are sites 5 and 6. D.ate of visit: Jan 2010 |

Sites 7-14 are the primary RV sites with hookups. Parking pads are slightly raised above the ground level - a good thing when it rains. There was a lot of standing water left from rain several days before. |

Sites 11-14. Our impression was that the park has been cleaned up quite a bit. When we first stayed here, it was a Newport city facility, but at some point Wakulla County took over its operation, and devoted some effort to improving the campground. |

The bathhouse is nothing fancy, but serves the purpose adequately. It appeared to be fairly clean and offers free showers. I can't attest as to how hot they actually are. |

In the center of the loop are two picnic pavilions and a small play area for the kids. |
Right across from the campground is the entrance to St Marks NWR. A leisurely 10-mile ride will bring you to the St Marks Lighthouse. This light dates from 1830, and had an additional 10 feet added to it in 1883, putting its fourth-order Fresnel lens 80 feet above sea level. It has survived hurricanes and use by both sides during the Civil War. . |

Much of the refuge is comprised of various pools - some salt water and some fresh. During the spring and fall migration seasons this is a busy gathering place for serious birders. Even at other times of the year, you'll see them out with their mega-telephoto lenses. |

Newport County Park is a small, not-many-frills campground located on US-98 in Newport, FL. It's a convenient sot to spend a night or two while visiting the St Marks NWR, located right across the highway.
