The campground at Moundville Archaeological Park is located in a wooded area on the southwest side of the park.  One can walk from the campground to visit the Mounds.

Date of visit: Apr 2010

We pulled into the campground about 11 AM on a Thursday morning and had no problem finding a site.  Check-in is at the Visitors Center.  Upon prcoeeding to the campground itself, only three of the 29 sites were taken.  We selected site 7 for its mix of sun and shade.  It also offered a view across a field towards the mounds.

Sites are not particularly well-defned, other than by the utility post.  You're free to park however you like.  Most sites seemed reasonably level, but we did use our leveling jacks to trim it up a bit.  Here are sites 11 (in foreground) and 13 (the small trailer).

Sites 15-13.

Railroad tracks are located near the Visitors Center and we saw/heard several trains during our stay.

Site 16 is on the inside of the loop road.

Site 24 is a back-in site.

Site 24 is also a back-in site.  Through the trees you can see the Black Warrior River.
Sites 29-31 are a little more open and close to the bathhouse, which is just to the left.

The sunniest sites are 3, 4 and 6.

The bathhouse is pretty basic and is need of a sprucing up.  It was reasonably clean and the free showers were hot.  It is not heated and is closed from 1 December to 1 March.
Twenty-eight flat-topped earthen pyramids were built on 326 acres, centered around a large central plaza.  Click here for some more pictures of the mounds area.
