Loft Mt CG, VA
During the years we lived in Maryland, Loft Mountain Campground, up on the Skyline Drive north of Charlottesville, VA, was our "favoritest" place for escaping the bustle of life around Washington DC. It's a large, first-come/first-served campground located high atop Big Flat Mountain (the real Loft Mt is the next mountain over). No hook-ups, but fresh water, a dump station, hot pay showers and a camp store are available. 219 mostly-shaded sites are spread out along several loops of paved roads; most are quite private. Two waterfalls and trails into the Big Run Wilderness Area are nearby; the Appalachian Trail runs through the campground.

Our favorite site, #14. Sites 11 through 19 are along the western edge of the mountain-top, affording gorgeous sunset views. |

Another
nice site is #40, which is an open site on the eastern side of the
CG. |

It's about
a mile hike along the Appalachian Trail to the summit of the real
Loft Mt. Just to the left of Ted, you can see the Skyline Drive heading
north. |

The clouds were in and out late one afternoon, making for a beautiful sunset. Constantly changing!
