Check-in is at the Ranger Station/Gift Shop, located beside the parkig lot for the day-use area. They've done something very useful here - they have a binder with a photo of each site.

Date of visit: Nov 2010

Since we were going to be here the weekend before Thanksgiving, we decided to make a reservation.  We selected site 14 - sunny but with a couple of shade trees nearby.

Last year, arriving without a reservation, we used the campground map and the photo of the site in the binder to select site 3 - a very pleasant site surrounded by grass and scattered trees.

The two older bathhouses have recently been totally renovated and are now more weather-proof.  Free hot showers are provided and facilities were quite clean.

Site 9 is right beside one of the two paths to the beach; the other is between sites 33 and 35.

This is looking down the road with sites 74 to 88.

The loop containing sites 103 to 133 is more wooded than the rest of the campground.  Sites are well-separated from each other.

Sites 110 and 112.
Looking down the road that services sites 59 to 73.

There is a more modern bathhouse off the wooded loop.

The beginning of one of the walkways to the beach is beside site 9.  It starts off through the bushes.......
.....but soon opens up as you approach the beach.

The wide beach, stretching for miles, is attractive to fishermen as well as warmer-weather swimmers.

A short walk from the campground will take you Atalaya, the winter home of Archer and Anna Huntington, founders of Brookgreen Gardens.  Click here for a tour..
We had the time to explore the Sandpiper Pond Nature Trail this year.  It's about 1.2 miles from the campground to the end of the trail; one can retrace one's steps to return to the campground or walk back along a paved road.
Along the path are several observation decks looking out over a salt marsh and pond.
The beach and ocean is off to left of the pond.
This group of scrub live oaks looks like one large tree that has been partially buried.
A couple of young girls drew this timely chalk picture on one of the campground roads.

Huntington Beach SP, SC

Huntington Beach State Park is located on the Atlantic Ocean just south of Murrells Inlet.  It's a very pleasant, mostly open with a few scattered trees.  We used to stop at Myrtle Beach SP, but never were happy being stuck in the dark woods.  Huntington Beach has become our stop of choice.
