Edisto Beach SP, SC

Edisto Beach SP is another of our favorite camping spots on our way south each fall. At the far end of the campground is a large, open loop right beside the beach. There are 75 sites in the main campground; a short distance inland is a second campground with 54 sites. Sites have water and electric hookups; there is a dump station about a mile from the main campground. A nice feature of this park is its proximity to civilization, so to speak. Just outside the gate is a grocery store, restaurants, and other shops, all within walking distance. A downside of Edisto is the water quality. However, good drinking water is available at the fire station, a couple of miles from the park entrance. Cell phone coverage varies, based on carrier.

Here are three of the four best sites at Edisto. The Rutchka's blue LD is on #19, our green LD is on #20, and the Class A is on #22. The beach is just to the right. The fourth "El Primo" site is #18, just to the left of the blue rig.

We usually visit Edisto in the late fall, but in 2004 we also stopped there on our way north in March. It was a little more crowded, and one afternoon, we were blessed with this beautiful rainbow. We're on the left on site #32.
This shows some of the sites along the road back through the CG. The open area shown above is at the end of this road. These sites feature a combination of shade and sun. It's not far to the beach from here, although it's hidden from view by higher dunes and trees.
There are also more shaded sites along the road through the CG. These would probably be very desireable during the summer.
The beach always attracts lots of fisherman, along with shell-hunters and walkers.
In 2004 the park opened a new Interpretive Center over near the Live Oak Campground, back a ways from the beach. Lots of nice exhibits about the animals and flora of the area. Another must-see stop is the Edisto Historical Museum, back up Rt 174 about 5 miles.
A well-packed bike and hiking trail connects the Live Oak CG and the Interpretive Center. Along the way, you can pause to enjoy the views out over the tidal inlets and marshes.
This is typical of the sites at the Live Oaks CG - all are shaded. We've heard the mosquitoes and no-see-ums can be a problem here.
The Live Oak CG will soon have a brand-new bath-house. The two bath-houses at the Beach CG are considerably older, but do offer hot showers.

Just offshore is the Edisto Queen, a shrimp trawler.
