We arrived in late March and founds lots of empty spaces. Site 29 overlooks the lake   There were about a half dozen sites with little tents set up on them, obviously folks came out early to claim their spot for next week's vacation.

Date of visit: Mar 2012

Reservations are not taken here; in fact, it is an honor-pay campground.  Last year we had been concerned that it being the week before Easter, there might be a problem finding a site.  But no, there were plenty from which to choose.  Here we are on site 20, with a view through the trees to the lake.

Sites 28, 29 and 11.  Sites 27-35 are the waterfront sites.

Sites 2-5 on the right, 11-13 on the left.

Looking back down the hill with sites 1-4 on the left, 11-13 on the right.  Our rig is on site 20.

Sites 9 and 8 are large, sunny sites.

An overall view of the upper end of the campground.  That first empty site in the middle is site 36.
Sites 26, 25 and 32-34.

Site 32 offers a grand view of the lake.

There are five walk-in tent sites; each has electric and water hookups.
The bathhouse is small, but offers free hot showers.

A short walk from the campground is the day-use area, which includes a large bowl-shaped swimming area when the lake is at full-pool.

A little further past the day-use area is Cherokee Dam.  One can walk nearly half a mile along the dam to the spillway.  After descending 121 steps, one can return to the campground via a paved path through the fields below the dam.
Cherokee Dam was completed in 1941.  It stand 175' tall and is 6,760' long.  Cherokee Lake behind the dam extends for 59 miles.
